Caroline Miller
Pig Roast Ring: Silver, copper, chalcedony

Artist’s Statement
I have always been attracted to natural elements; fire, air, water and earth.  With these, I am interested in using metallurgy, mathematics, my imagination and my hands to sculpt metal into forms that express line, shape, color, definition and meaning.
The materials I use are primarily malleable metals: silver, gold, brass, copper and bronze.  However, I like to juxtapose the precious and the non-precious, so I also use plastics like Formica and Plexiglas.  Additionally I often incorporate semi-precious stones and found materials.
My work revolves around two distinct techniques – forging and construction.  Many of my constructed pieces are narrative, whereas many of my forged pieces are simply aesthetic.  I enjoy, in my construction, playing with social concepts. I my forging I like to concentrate on a more traditional definition of jewellery.  In a sense my work 9s a microscopic study of the world we live in.  In another sense it is simply part of the world we live in.
